On a most unusual rectangular islet in Siberia stands an enigmatic structure whose function scientists are still debating, without having reached a shared conclusion.
The structure dates back about 1,300 years, and according to some recent hypotheses it may have been an astronomical observatory. The mystery remains deep, not least because archaeologists have recently found jewellery, objects and figures on the site that are still being studied.
Its resemblance to the mythical Temple of Jerusalem is intriguing. According to the Torah, the Temple was a dwelling of the divine presence in the lower world, built to house the Ark of the Covenant, and it was considered the most important sacred building in the Jewish religion.
